HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF THE INTERIOR DESIGN INDUSTRY

INTRODUCTION

Interior design was born out of an instinct to strictly coordinate with the architecture of buildings before it became a profession. The advent of middle-class life and the appeal of sophisticated architecture during the industrial revolution ushered in the profession of interior design. The need to make the most of available space, as well as a focus on user's comfort and functional design, continues to drive the evolution and life-enhancing potential of today's iteration of the interior design profession.

EARLY INTERIORS

The idea of decorating interiors to be more ergonomic and pleasing to their inhabitants dates back to ancient times. Indeed, cave paintings, ceramics, and later furniture and rustic living appliances were hallmarks of early interior design. Designers of ancient Egyptian mud dwellings left significant indications of styling — patterns were carved into the mud-plaster walls of buildings, and specific steps were taken to make the interiors more appealing to live.

Mansions was decorated with animal sculptures and carpets.
The Egyptians often humanized nature; they believed that a person can turn into the animal and vice versa.

THE FIRST INTERIOR DESIGNERS

Although the term "interior design" was not coined until the early nineteenth century, artists have taken commissions from wealthy members of society to adorn their houses and public spaces throughout history.

Rhoda and Agnes Garret

Rhoda and Agnes Garret, cousins who were instructed to be 'house designers' in 1874, were the first women to be acknowledged as professional interior designers. Their style was largely influenced by the designers William Morris, and their first book, Suggestions for House Decoration in Painting, was well received by the British middle class, who were always on the lookout for new design ideas for their numerous homes and enterprises.

Elsie De Wolfe

Elsie De Wolfe, known as "the first American designer," was born in New York in 1865. De Wolfe embraced the designer lifestyle to the fullest, dazzled potential clients with her immaculate French-inspired personal style. She received her education in the United Kingdom but returned to the United States to pursue a career as an actress, soon after taking up interior design as a full-time job. Wolfe moved in with famed literary agent Elisabeth Marbury while receiving notoriety for her theatrical taste, and reportedly converted their drab flat into a gorgeous living area during her stay there.

A GROWING INDUSTRY

As the 20th century progressed, the globe began to enter a new era of mass manufacturing and technology. Automation and machine labour were becoming more common in daily life, and this was reflected in interior architecture at the period.

HISTORY OF INTERIOR DESIGN IN MAURITIUS

Jean Daniel Rosette; a draughtsman working for Space Lab stated "There is no specific timeline for the introduction of interior design in Mauritius". Interior design was less prominent than architecture in the 1980s. Contractors used to build homes and design the interiors themselves because clients prioritized practicality above aesthetics. Even the prospect of paid interior design employment was disregarded. Professionals are only employed in businesses that require both aesthetic appeal and usefulness, such as commerce and hospitality.

The phrase "Interior Designer" was first used in Mauritius in the 1990s.
Their role was to choose the suitable color for a location, as well as soft furnishings and even wedding stylists. Everything, including floor plans and sketch views, was done by hand.

The industry is developing and introducing new digital components to the area using current technology, such as idea boards, AutoCAD drawings, 3D views, and renderings.
